RECOGNIZING 3PL EXCELLENCE
It's that time of year again -- the culmination of our annual Top 10 3PL Excellence Awards survey. This year the responses just kept pouring in. You told us how your 3PL provider stacks up to the competition and we listened.
It has become our yearly tradition -- you vote, we compile the results, and the best 3PL providers come out on top.
Each year we conduct this survey to recognize the 3PL providers that serve your needs well, in the hopes of encouraging more of the same. To the readers who voted this year, thank you for your participation. If you did not voice your opinion, why not give us the benefit of your experience and place your vote for 2006?
As we say each year, don't kill the messenger if your favorite third-party logistics provider didn't make the list this time around -- vote for them for next year's awards at http://www.inboundlogistics.com/top10
The Top 10 3PL Awards are based on faxed, mailed, and emailed ballots received December 2004 to June 2005. Readers nominated more than 300 companies this year and upwards of 3,000 votes (some were disqualified), further proof of the continuing competition among outsourced logistics providers. The companies that received the most votes are listed at left.

About the Survey
Respondents represent all industries -- manufacturing; retail and distribution; services and government; and even carriers. Voters' titles also reflect a broad range of functions, mirroring the need for collaboration and inter-discipline cooperation in the field.
Corporate management accounted for 43 percent of respondents; logistics/distribution, 32 percent; traffic/transportation, 15 percent; and supply chain management, 10 percent.
Not surprisingly, readers are investing significantly more in logistics services than years past. Fifty percent spend in excess of $10 million on logistics services per year. Thirty-one percent spend $1 to $10 million a year on logistics, while 19 percent list a logistics spend topping out at $1 million per year.
The varied services they buy as part of their responsibilities indicate the broad scope of transportation and logistics challenges respondents face. That responsibility makes our participants qualified arbiters of good 3PL customer service.
2005 Top 10 3PLs
Here are the rankings of the Top 10 3PLs, according to our readers: UPS Supply Chain Solutions grabs the number-one spot for the third year in a row, while Schneider Logistics stays a solid second for the fourth consecutive year. C.H. Robinson jumps up two spots to land in third, edging out last year's third-place winner, Menlo Worldwide, which captures fourth. FedEx Supply Chain Services lands in fifth for the second year, sharing the rank with Ryder, which has garnered top-five status each year since our survey began. Another tie heats up sixth place, where Exel, repeating last year's rank, joins Penske Logistics, which betters the seventh-place notch it held for the last two years. Transplace also beat its 2004 finish by one to land in seventh, while Landstar Logistics climbs two spots to claim eighth place, and AmeriCold repeats its ninth-place ranking. Rounding out the Top 10 is a tie between TNT Logistics, which returns to the list after a one-year hiatus, and BNSF Logistics, in its second year on our voters' radar screens.
Although the survey is not an encyclopedia of 3PL providers, it is an important differentiator in identifying leading 3PLs. Their clients -- our readers -- are the most well-informed buyers of 3PL services in the world.
